Effective Communication and Marketing Techniques for Green Homes
Speaker:
Marc Richmond, Practica Consulting
Green homes are selling faster and for a higher profit than non-green homes. Do you want to take advantage of this opportunity to understand how to communicate with your customers about the benefits of a green home? Are you offering a green home, product or service, or want to? Do you know how to best leverage the green elements in your sales and marketing? Let an expert assist you with understanding: effective word choice and language, sales and marketing techniques, advertising tactics and resources, with examples of do’s and don’ts to maximize your efforts in this new frontier.
Marc Richmond is a green building consultant that has been training on green building and working with builders across the nation for over seventeen years. With his breadth of knowledge, understanding and the ability to convey that knowledge to others, he has been a transformer of the way we build and communicate about green homes. |

The Principles of Sustainable Landscaping
This class examines the core principles of sustainable landscaping, including design, plant selection, irrigation and maintenance. It will feature beautiful, sustainable gardens that use advanced water-efficient irrigation systems and climate-appropriate plants for color, texture, and habitat. Furthermore it will discuss how a well designed landscape can minimize impacts on global and local resources, reduce maintenance costs, and still produce attractive results. In addition, the class will look at local policies and regulations that affect the landscape industry here in southern California.
Click here to see a demonstration that shows the water savings from a traditional garden to a native plant garden over a period of one year. There has been 18 months straight of reduced water demand in the City.

Developers and Home Builders Go Green
Moderator:
Wally
Geer, Greymar Associates
Speakers:
Harlan Lee, Lee Homes
Dan Thompson, Mastercraft Homes
Steve Lappin, Pacific Cove Development
Steve
Ruffner, KB Home
Wally Geer, president of Greymar Associates, shall moderate a panel of real estate developers who are currently involved in the Green Building movement. Homebuilders and residential developers understand that 2008 appears to be the "tipping point" year for the residential green building movement. Regretfully, there is still a limited amount of resources available to the residential development community regarding how to successfully plan and execute a sustainable housing development.
The panel shall represent a broad cross section of home builders and residential developers from both the private and non-profit sector that are currently involved in the successful implementation of green building strategies in the projects they are developing. Whether you build one home a year or are the senior management of a national development company, this panel presentation should provide both insights and some lively discussions among the members regarding the state of profitable green building strategies.
There will also be a brief presentation regarding how to integrate deconstruction and reuse into the development of green homes, as well as a brief presentation following the panel discussion regarding the financing of sustainable homes and communities.

Civic Projects on the Horizon: Ambitious Developments from the CRA/LA and the City of Santa Monica
Two Los Angeles-area municipalities are creating ambitious holistic developments. The CRA/LA’s Green Tec Corridor will be a ground-up development on a 20-acre parcel downtown. Envisioned as a technology campus with an anchor tenant and satellite occupants, the site marries new construction and sustainable building. The City of Santa Monica is exploring ways to tie together an incoming Expo line—now that a station has been sited—its civic center, high school, a new park, the Sears automotive plaza, Holiday Inn and other elements that will see renovation and/or new development.

Emily Gabel-Luddy, FASLA, Director, Urban Design Studio, City of Los Angeles
Panelists:
Alex Paxton, Manager of Policy Analysis, Community Redevelopment Agency, City of Los Angeles

The New Gold Rush – California Trends and Policies Affecting the Building Industry and Creating Green Business Opportunities
Speakers:
Tenaya Asan, Build It Green
Marc Richmond, Practica Consulting
California is leading the nation in green building and efforts to reduce green house gas emissions. Transforming the residential built environment is one of the targeted sources of reduction. New jobs are being created to accomplish these rigorous goals. Stimulus funds and policy changes will help to create new opportunities if you know where to turn.
This session will provide an overview of the policy, legislative and industry changes including trends, (e.g.: AB32, HERS Phase 2 and local jurisdiction policies) that affect all of us in the built environment. We will discuss the forthcoming opportunities (AB811, ARRA Act, foreclosures and mortgages), showing tools, resources and training needed to take advantage of these opportunities, with information on where to go and who to turn to.
Tenaya Asan is the Manager of GreenPoint Rated Program at Build It Green and was instrumental in developing GreenPoint Rated Existing Home. Build It Green is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote healthy, resource efficient homes in California. Build It Green provides services and training to construction professionals, local jurisdictions and other industry stakeholders, in response to the transformational changes to the built environment. They have trained over 3300 Certified Green Building Professionals and 700 GreenPoint Raters/Advisors, while working with over 100 local jurisdictions statewide.
Marc Richmond of Practica Consulting, is a green building consultant that has been teaching green building and working with builders across the nation for over sixteen years.
